    The tri – syllable word, as opposed to the Name which is still retained, was in both the old catechisms and in the pre–1989 version of the Mystical Lecture and was said to be in four languages. None of the three elements of the word was a name of God or gods, nor was the word a combination of gods. But there was a significant body of erudite opinion which considered that the tri-syllable might be considered offensive, so it was removed from the ritual.

    This change was affected by Supreme Grand Chapter on 8th February 1989.
